[Cob] cob as mortar for cordwood buildingAmanda Peck ap615 at hotmail.comFri Feb 20 17:51:30 CST 2004
Asphalt Emulsion sticks to almost anything--even AOL CD's. Ms Taylor included a papercrete/AE one in an order once. I wouldn't think that poly bags would be a challenge after that! Evans and Roy did some cob/cordwood experimentation together. Not sure what the result was. The trickiest thing might be to tuck point a new layer of earthen plaster or lime mix or whatever around the logs--still want the logs to stick out a little bit, want the straw in the cob proper to be covered, want a nice smooth surface that is at least semi-waterproof. ........ Pack McKibben, Charmaine Taylor and Mary Lou McFarland are doing some thinking about cob and cordwood (here's McFarland's thought): Jack Henstridge is one of the "grand-daddies" of cordwood building and his recipe for mortar mix is as follows: 1 measure of portland cement, 2 measures of sawdust, 3 measures of sand and gravel. Perhaps it would work to replace the portland with hydrated lime, and use the sand and clay instead of the sand and gravel. Just a thought. _________________________________________________________________ Watch high-quality video with fast playback at MSN Video.
