It might be worth casting a mixture of clay and paperpulp as a liner..
and then fireing it.
Maybe a hot water tank.. or a pressure tank for starters.
It would seem the ideal way of burning wood  leaves twigs etc. is in
little pieces and augered into the fire pit.
that way what ever is in there is burned as one process and not in
stages.
mini stages. I guess.

however you could build a stove out of clay sand and paperpulp and not
have steel. 
you might be able to mix in gravel for thermal mass.
