I don't know if all of that holds true for mass stoves. You need not cut any wood for a mass heating stove. They can burn nothing but wood scraps, found dead wood or even paper and heat the mass of the stove. Typical burn times for a stove like this is as little as one hour and the smaller the wood, the hotter the fire, the quicker it heats the mass. 

I have a rather large stove planned for my small cob building that will have elevated seats and warming nooks. The composition will be cob and stone and I have a mason helping with the planning and building. It has to be finished by this time next year!
