Cob: Cob Building Workshop in KansasDorethy Hancock dorethy at juno.comWed Jul 30 22:22:42 CDT 2003
Announcing a rarity: A Cob-Building Workshop in the Midwest: (Or you could call it an old-fashioned house raising party) near Mayetta, Kansas--20 miles north and 3 miles west of Topeka, Kansas, on the Potawatomi Indian Reservation, August 9, 10, & 11th. Price for all 3 days is only $30, which is to meet expenses for lunches and snacks, prepared by a friend who cooks organic and caters for a living (yum!) If coming from a distance, you may camp on my 30 acres, bringing food for morning and evening meals. Incidental necessities can be purchased at "Nation Station", a convenience store 2 miles away by Harrah's Casino (how's that for an incongruency in the neighborhood?). Leaders of the workshop include one person who apprenticed for the Cob Cottage Co., and another person who took one of their cobbing workshops in California this spring and who hopes to be "into" this house before freezing weather. Sorry this is short notice, but we've been busy building an urbanite stemwall, and "doing email" has gone by the wayside. If interested in all of--or part of--this event, please respond to me, as soon as possible, preferrably by phone: 785-273-6947 (Topeka), or 785-966-3095 (Mayetta), or 816-289-7321 (cell phone). Leave a message and I'll call you back, or else call the Topeka number after 7:00 p.m. Yes, it's kinda hot here, but the entire building site is in the shade--it's in a wooded area, plus the site has a large tarp over it, so it's really not bad. Composting toilets and solar shower will be available. We'll supply drinking water, but please bring your own bottles. We discourage styrofoam and pop cans. No smoking on the site, please: if you smoke, please do so out by the road, disposing of butts in a proper container. (Surely I don't have to remind cobbers to respect Mother Nature!) If you can only come for a portion of that weekend, or if you'd like to stay and work even longer, let's talk!
