Cob: cobbers and others in NC

These are the details of the first meeting of a new natural building coalition in the mountains of North Carolina. Many expressed an interest in cob and at least two had some experience.

The first meeting of the newly formed natural building coalition was a success. Thirteen people attended on a wet, snowy mountain day and spent two hours discussing methods, building codes and direction for the group.

The meeting began with introductions and explanations of each persons interest in natural building. Discussion moved on to local and state building codes and difficulties that might arise in obtaining a permit. It was noted that it is possible to get a permit for what might be an experimental building.

Direction for the group was then discussed. It was agreed that the major purpose of the group would be educational with the target being building inspectors and the general public. Also, the group would function as a support net for it’s members and others interested in natural building. There was discussion of setting up a recycled building materials swap system.

Various members expressed an interest in helping other members on their projects.

Duties were assigned next. Two persons agreed to pursue non-profit status, two would handle PR (including website), one would act as a liason between other groups and one person would look into the recycled building materials.

Last, the next meeting date was set and a homework assignment given. The meeting date was determined to be April 22 at 7PM in the Agricultural Center, Room B. The assignment was two-fold: come up with a name for the group and bring in “your ideal natural dream house” plan. Plans will be discussed and compared to determine what similar problems might be encountered.
