Cob: The roofb bolo1942 at hotmail.comTue Feb 25 14:51:09 CST 2003
Check out a reciprocal roof. I think it goes well with cob as well as other natural building structures. There is a series of pictures on a round building at Pine Manor Resorts that has a reciprocal roof, as well as hydronic dirt floor painted with a fantastic blue mural of the solar system. http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/bolo1942/lst?.dir=/Round+Straw+Bale+with+Reciproc al+Roof&.src=ph&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/&.view=t Click on the 'reciprocal roof' folder. One of the interesting things about a reciprocal roof is there is very little outward force exerted on the walls if it is done properly as opposed to some other types of round roofs. It is also an aboriginal type of building technique with a natural feeling that goes good with earthen construction. You can use recycled timbers (as was done with this one) small timber in the round cut from the back yard or finely milled exotic lumber (gasp!!!). Browse some of the other folders while you are there for the various stages of the building's construction. The building is located at Pine Manor Retreats, just outside Lake Elsinore CA. There are also two beautiful cob cottages plus some other neat stuff. The small cob cottage is in the finishing stage (if there is such a thing with cob, heh?) as we speak.
