Miranda,
   is your soil difficult to dig into even when saturated after a few
days of steady rain?  If so, you will need a foundation of some kind for
sure.

Sounds like an even better reason to use compost toilets.  Use the
valuable resultant resource, compost, over you compressed limestone to
grow some greens or veggies.
