Cob: Rammed Earth floorCharmaine R Taylor tms at northcoast.comMon Jun 11 18:46:54 CDT 2001
Hi J. , you will want some fiber (finely straw, goat hair ) to avoid cracks, and if it does crack you can carve around them to look like flagstone...this is what Kelly Hart did on his earth floor inside his CO earthbag home, and it looks gorgeous. You can add 5-12% lime to satzbilize and harden the floor. I have used clay (with silt and sand) plus lime putty ( just lime in water) to shape bowls that are like stone. The lime will lighten the color of the floor too to gold/beige/tan sort of. You might want to plan impressing grid marks or designs to keep the floor from cracking in the first place. The Steens have a small booklet "Earthen Floors" $9. but you can try it yourself first on a small scale.
