Please direct questions to Joelee Joyce <dawnaz at earthlink.net>. (Joelee was the principal organizer of the recent sold-out 500-seat-auditorium international strawbale slide show in Tucson.) * EARTHEN BREAD OVEN - START TO FINISH MARCH 20-21, TUCSON, AZ COURSE DESCRIPTION: This two-day workshop will cover all the basics one needs to easily build and cook in a natural, outdoor earthen baking oven. We will build a modified version of the Quebec-Canadian style clay ovens. In contrast to the adobe "horno" ovens often seen in the southwestern United States, these Canadian ovens are shaped more like a horseshoe and typically require less wood to heat. They are beautiful and efficient. During the workshop we will build/sculpt and plaster the walls of a oven using a "cob"-like mix of clay, straw and pumice. The skills required to construct an oven are simple and no prior building experience is necessary. Cooking with a wood-fired clay oven can bring great enjoyment to the process of preparing food and adds a distinctive flavor to baked foods including pizzas, bread, pies, turkeys and casseroles. A great backyard project and introduction to working with natural materials. The cost of this two-day workshop, taught by Athena Steen, is $85 per person. The time is March 20 & 21, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The location is in central Tucson (details provided upon registration). Handouts and materials will be provided. Bring gloves, hat and sun screen, sack lunch for Saturday, and a potluck dish for Sunday. Drinks and snacks will be provided.
